I once worked as a stevedore at Port Newark. I shoveled a lot of scrap metal, thought a lot about things as I shoveled.

I eventually ended up as a pediatrician working in homeless shelters and in public housing projects. Most of the places I worked at no longer exist–Stella Wright Homes, the Carlton Hotel, Hayes Homes, Mravlag Manor–but I’m still here.
Now I teach science in my hometown.
